Transforming 320,000 Mosques into Beacons of Hope for Sustainable Empowerment

PoriPurno News Desk | August 11, 2025
Bangladesh is home to approximately 320,000 mosques — sacred spaces where the call to prayer (Adhān) rises to the heavens five times a day, millions bow in submission before Rabb al-‘Ālamīn, and the melodious recitation of the Qur’an resonates in every corner.
Yet behind these spiritual sanctuaries stand the Imams and Mu’azzins — the pillars of mosque life — many of whom survive on a meager monthly income of 3,000 to 5,000 Bangladeshi taka, sometimes not even that. Their children watch classmates wear shoes they cannot afford, their wives see neighbors return from the market with fuller bags, and the Imams themselves often stand at the miḥrāb in worn-out garments.
This raises a profound question: Can we create honorable, sustainable income streams for these religious leaders while strengthening the mosque as a true community hub?
1. Islamic Library and Du‘ā Corner
Every mosque could dedicate a small shelf in one corner, offering du‘ā books, tasbīḥ, ‘itr, translated Qur’ans, and Islamic books for children. These would not be “sold” but “gifted,” with a donation box nearby labeled:
“Give as you wish, for the sake of Allah.”
At day’s end, 50% of the collected donations would go to the Imam’s personal income, and 50% to mosque development. The Prophet ﷺ said:
« أَفْضَلُ الصَّدَقَةِ أَنْ تَتَعَلَّمَ الْمُسْلِمَ عِلْمًا، ثُمَّ تُعَلِّمَهُ أَخَاكَ الْمُسْلِمَ »
“The best charity is to learn knowledge and then teach it to your Muslim brother.”
(Sunan Ibn Mājah, ḥadīth no. 243)
2. Afternoon Islamic Coaching Center
Mosques can host tajwīd classes for children in the afternoon, along with basic supplication memorization and prayer training. The monthly fee would be minimal, but with 20–30 students, the cumulative amount becomes meaningful. This could help an Imam buy new clothes for his daughter before Eid.
The Qur’an emphasizes:
« وَقُلْ رَبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا »
“And say, ‘My Lord, increase me in knowledge.’”
(Sūrah Ṭā-Hā 20:114)
3. Small Halāl Product Corner
A simple table could display halāl honey, black seed oil, miswāk, ‘itr, and Ramadan drinks like Ruh Afza. Worshippers, after prayer, might notice and purchase — supporting both their health and the Imam’s livelihood.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
« الحَبَّةُ السَّوْدَاءُ شِفَاءٌ مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ إِلَّا السَّامَ »
“The black seed is a cure for every disease except death.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, ḥadīth no. 5688)
4. Mosque-Based YouTube Channel
Daily khutbahs, short Q&A sessions, “Verse of the Day,” and “Hadith of the Day” could be recorded and uploaded. With time, channel monetization can support mosque expenses and Imam salaries.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
« مَنْ دَلَّ عَلَى خَيْرٍ فَلَهُ مِثْلُ أَجْرِ فَاعِلِهِ »
“Whoever guides to something good has a reward similar to that of its doer.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, ḥadīth no. 1893)
5. Islamic Advisory Desk
A dedicated time for community members to seek advice on mahr calculation, divorce rulings, property distribution, and other Shariah matters. Visitors may voluntarily offer financial appreciation, ensuring the Imam’s work is both respected and compensated.
Allah says:
« فَاسْأَلُوا أَهْلَ الذِّكْرِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ »
“Ask the people of knowledge if you do not know.”
(Sūrah al-Naḥl 16:43)

6. Simple Nikāḥ and ‘Aqīqah Services
Mosques could host small, blessed ceremonies without extravagance, keeping them focused on barakah and sincerity. A small honorarium given to the Imam becomes an act of gratitude and sustenance.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
« أَعْظَمُ النِّكَاحِ بَرَكَةً أَيْسَرُهُ مَئُونَةً »
“The most blessed marriage is the one with the least expense.”
(Musnad Aḥmad, ḥadīth no. 24529)
7. Digital Skills Training
Imams could learn Photoshop, video editing, or basic Arabic translation for freelance work. A knowledgeable person with digital skills can serve Islam and earn lawfully, turning both pen and camera into tools for societal change.
Mosques as Community Hubs
A mosque is not just a building; it is a living community hub — a place where prayer inspires thought, thought inspires solutions, and solutions bring transformation.
With 320,000 mosques, Bangladesh could foster 320,000 beacons of hope — reducing poverty, uplifting communities, and spreading authentic Islamic knowledge.
Even companies could collaborate by appointing local representatives through this vast mosque network, ensuring both economic activity and social responsibility flourish.
Allah says:
« وَمَنْ أَحْسَنُ قَوْلًا مِمَّنْ دَعَا إِلَى اللَّهِ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًا وَقَالَ إِنَّنِي مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ »
“And who is better in speech than one who calls to Allah, does righteous deeds, and says, ‘Indeed, I am of the Muslims.’”
(Sūrah Fuṣṣilat 41:33)
