Artificial Intelligence Helps PBI Solve Mysterious Fire at BIAM Auditorium

PoriPurno News Desk | August 02, 2025
In a stunning showcase of modern investigative capabilities, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) in Dhaka has successfully used Artificial Intelligence (AI) to unravel what initially appeared to be a tragic accident. The incident—an air conditioner explosion in February at the BIAM Auditorium in Hatirjheel—claimed the lives of two individuals. However, months later, PBI has revealed that it was not an accident at all, but a calculated act of arson.
The case was investigated under the supervision of Superintendent of Police (SP) Abdur Rahman, head of a key PBI zone in Dhaka. SP Rahman, during an internal press briefing, shared the chilling details of the discovery.
From Accident to Arson: How the Truth Emerged
Initially, the explosion was believed to be a mechanical failure—a typical AC malfunction leading to fire and casualties. However, when PBI took over the investigation, irregularities began to surface. Their forensic and technical team suspected intentional sabotage.
Further analysis revealed that the fire was deliberately set and not the result of any AC malfunction. Shockingly, the two individuals who perished in the incident were actually co-conspirators who had entered the room with the intent to set it ablaze. A third accomplice, whose role was initially undetected, had managed to escape.
How AI Cracked the Case
The third suspect’s identity remained elusive—until AI tools were brought into the investigation. Here’s how PBI leveraged technology in unprecedented ways:
- Facial Reconstruction Using AI:
CCTV footage captured a masked individual disabling one of the cameras shortly before the fire. Though the face was partially covered, PBI used AI to reconstruct probable facial structures from the visible portions. The system generated multiple facial predictions, helping narrow down possible identities.
- Movement Pattern Analysis:
AI also analyzed the suspect’s body movement and gait—data that was cross-referenced with employees who had access to the building. It was discovered that each person has unique motion signatures, and the suspect’s movement matched that of a BIAM staff member.
- Clothing Disguise Detection:
No one matching the suspect’s visible clothing had entered the premises. Investigators concluded the perpetrator must have changed clothes inside the building, further confirming insider involvement.
Eventually, using the AI-driven insights combined with traditional surveillance, police identified the third suspect—a staff member of the BIAM auditorium, who was promptly arrested.
The Botched Plan: What Really Happened That Day
According to police findings, the three conspirators had planned to burn important documents stored within a specific room. The plan was meticulous:
- The third man disabled the CCTV camera.
- Two others entered the room, poured petrol, and attempted to ignite the fire.
However, the flammable nature of petrol—particularly in a sealed, enclosed room with limited air circulation—resulted in an immediate and uncontrollable explosion. The fire rapidly consumed the room, and both men were trapped and killed instantly by the flames they had ignited.
Ironically, their lack of understanding about petrol’s behavior in confined spaces became their undoing.
