Last year, Asif Mahtab arrived late at the residence of Sheikh Abdul Hai Saifullah. When asked about the delay, he explained that he had been speaking at a student protest. It was an unplanned visit—there was no prior scheduled meeting. On his way, he encountered the student demonstration and moved forward to join them. The students recognized him and invited him to speak. This was during a period when student protests were sweeping across the country.
Despite physical difficulties while walking due to ongoing health issues, Asif Mahtab remained active on the streets. His commitment never faltered—he authored provocative posts, faced arrest, endured time in jail, and confronted interrogation.
Asif Mahtab lives a life rooted in Islamic discipline and dedicates himself to Islamic education. His principled stand against the secular education system cost him his job at BRAC University after he tore up pages of textbooks he opposed. Yet, he harbors no regrets over this loss; rather, he feels a sense of satisfaction.

Had Asif Mahtab not been an Islamist, he would have been celebrated as a key figure in the July uprising. However, his Islamic stance has led to opposition, particularly from secular circles and BRAC University. Conversely, many Islamists hesitate to embrace him fully—if one is not an active member of their own party, accepting him becomes difficult. This narrow-mindedness is a challenge we all face, and I too have been among the critics.
In the past, I often met with Asif Mahtab, but lately our encounters have become fewer, perhaps because he himself ventures out less.
If no party members come forward, an independent group will honor Asif Mahtab soon, InshaAllah, although I understand he is indifferent to such gestures.
