Recently, the arrest of two young brothers involved in the extortion cases in Gulshan has deeply shocked many. These brothers come from an extremely poor family — their father works at a petrol station, and the boys used to support their studies by giving tuition classes to other students. For them, education was the only way out of poverty.
However, about one and a half months ago, they stopped giving tuition. Due to their father’s limited education, he was unaware of the dangers his sons faced. Soon after, the boys were arrested in connection with extortion activities.
This tragic turn of events has shattered an entire family’s hopes and future.
Exploitation of Vulnerable Youth
It appears that these boys were merely pawns in a larger game. It is believed that older and more influential figures in the extortion ring, such as the leaders of extremist groups like ‘Baisah’ or ‘Baghash’, misled and manipulated these young brothers into abandoning their education.
Reports indicate that the main extortion mastermind, Riyad, had approximately 250 million Taka worth of cheques seized from his residence, showing the scale of the racket. While the masterminds continue to live luxuriously—buying iPhones, driving expensive cars, and enjoying the fruits of their illegal activities—the youth from poor families bear the brunt of the consequences.
Had these boys continued their education and stayed away from such influences, they might have found regular jobs or started businesses. Instead, their lives are now at great risk because of the manipulations by criminal networks.
Political Leaders and Misappropriation
It is also alleged that senior leaders of certain political groups have received shares of the extorted money, further fueling the cycle of exploitation and injustice. Meanwhile, ordinary families suffer the loss of their children’s futures.

Forced Recruitment of Schoolchildren in Tangail
In another distressing development, children from schools in Tangail have reportedly been forcibly taken to attend rallies organized by extremist groups. Students as young as class 7 and 8—some of them bright and promising—have been dragged into political activities far beyond their maturity.
Alumni of historic schools have expressed grave concern, noting that such incidents are unprecedented in institutions with histories spanning over 100 years. The forced involvement of minors in political rallies is both unethical and dangerous, as it risks corrupting their futures.
A Growing Social Menace
This pattern of using and abusing youth for political and criminal gains is spreading across many districts, yet media coverage remains limited. The cycle is likely to push many bright young individuals toward destructive paths, such as engaging in extortion or violent politics, inspired by the lifestyles of their ‘elders.’
If university students are already vulnerable to such influences, the damage to schoolchildren is even more alarming—this is a social virus that threatens to destabilize communities.
Helpless Witnesses to a Growing Crisis
Despite widespread awareness of these issues, many feel powerless to intervene or reverse the situation. This helplessness is painful to witness, as more families lose their children to forces beyond their control.
Conclusion
The cases of these young brothers and the forced politicization of children highlight a deep-rooted crisis of exploitation, manipulation, and social injustice. Unless urgent measures are taken to protect vulnerable youth, provide proper education, and curb the influence of criminal and extremist groups, Bangladesh risks losing a generation to these destructive cycles.
