Afser Ali, a 65-year-old resident of Tentulia in Panchagarh, has sparked controversy in the scientific community by claiming that Sir Isaac Newton’s laws of motion — one of the cornerstones of modern physics — are partly incorrect.
According to Ali, Newton’s First Law of Motion is correct but incomplete, the Second Law is entirely accurate, while the Third Law — “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction” — is, in his view, nothing more than an “imaginary logic.”
Ali, who served for many years at the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) before retiring, began his scientific exploration in 1996. While working there, he claimed to have discovered a new principle for engine movement. His theory suggests that through cyclic mechanical techniques, the inertia of matter, along with directional forces of action and reaction, can be regulated in a single direction and converted alternately between motion and rest. According to him, this process could lead to the generation of perpetual motion or self-sustaining mechanical energy — without the need for fuel.
His Disagreement with Newton
Ali argues that Newton’s First Law fails to explain the true source of external force, making it incomplete. He fully agrees with the Second Law — which relates the rate of change of momentum to the applied force — but rejects the Third Law outright.
“In reality,” Ali claims, “every action has friction, resistance, and reaction. When friction, resistance, and reaction are equal, an object remains at rest. If there’s no obstruction, an object will continue to move due to its inertia.”
He even disputes the conventional explanation of rocket propulsion, stating, “It’s wrong to say rockets move because of reaction force. They move because of momentum, which can be explained by the Second Law. The Third Law is just reasoning, not reality.”
Experiments and Struggles
As part of his research, Ali constructed a U-shaped cylinder for testing. When water is poured into it, trapped air creates pressure, which, upon release, allows falling water to generate power. He is attempting to develop a method to run engines without fuel or electricity based on this mechanism.
To conduct his experiments, Ali purchased several small diesel engines using his own funds. Over the years, he has spent nearly all his savings, leaving himself in financial hardship.
For almost 30 years, he has approached various institutions, including Dhaka University, the National Museum of Science and Technology, and Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, requesting verification of his findings. None have tested his claims so far. He firmly believes that if his work is scientifically validated, it could lead to groundbreaking innovations worldwide.
Background
Ali completed his Secondary School Certificate (SSC) in 1975 from Jagdal High School and a two-year technical course from Thakurgaon Technical School and College in 1978. He has written numerous essays and books but has been unable to publish them due to lack of opportunities.
He is now appealing for government sponsorship to scientifically verify his theories.

Mixed Reactions
Mohammad Sarwar Hossain, head teacher of Aziznagar Dimukhi High School in Tentulia — located near Ali’s home — acknowledged that Ali has long been questioning Newton’s Third Law and offering alternative explanations.
“Science is evidence-based,” Hossain said. “Newton’s Third Law is a recognized foundation of modern physics. But if Afser can present concrete proof for his theory, it should be considered seriously. Perhaps with government or societal support, we might discover whether his research contains any truth or new insights.”
Despite skepticism from the scientific community, Afser Ali remains determined to challenge centuries-old physics principles and prove his theories to the world.
