Artificial intelligence (AI) will become twice as effective as human educators within the next decade, according to Geoffrey Hinton, renowned as the “Godfather of AI” and a pioneering figure in the field. Speaking at the Gitex Europe Conference in Berlin, Hinton predicted a transformative shift in the future of education, driven by AI-powered teaching systems.
“AI teachers are not fully ready yet, but they will soon become a reality,” said Hinton. “They will provide the benefits of one-on-one tutoring, tailored to each learner.” He explained that students tend to learn nearly twice as fast with personalized instruction, and AI has the potential to replicate—and even improve upon—this dynamic by understanding each learner’s level and providing customized explanations.
Pilot Programs in the UK
The United Kingdom has already begun experimenting with AI-based teaching tools in schools. Tech giant Meta has developed an AI chatbot named Manda, currently being used to teach Mathematics and English in selected secondary schools across the country. Designed for students aged 11 to 16, Manda aligns with the UK’s national curriculum, specifically targeting Key Stages 3 and 4.
Manda has been trained on over 550,000 minutes of teacher-led video and audio content from 300 educators. It can curate customized learning modules based on each student’s abilities, allowing learners to ask questions anytime. Remarkably, the service is offered at a cost of just £10 per month.

AI-Driven Classrooms Without Human Teachers
In August last year, David Game College in London launched a groundbreaking initiative: GCSE classrooms operated entirely without human teachers. Instead, instruction is delivered using a combination of AI and Virtual Reality (VR) technologies.
John Dalton, Deputy Principal of the college, commented, “There are many excellent teachers, but we’re all human and prone to mistakes. AI, on the other hand, can analyze each student’s learning pace, weaknesses, and progress in a way humans simply cannot.”
The AI system identifies students’ strong and weak areas and builds personalized learning plans accordingly. It prioritizes difficult topics first while reserving simpler content for later practice.
AI is Redefining the Teaching Profession
Globally, many educators are already leveraging AI tools for lesson planning, homework evaluation, and feedback generation. Increasing workloads, time constraints, and classroom limitations have prompted teachers to rely on technology for efficiency and support.
While Hinton remains optimistic about AI’s role in education, he also expressed concern. “Within the next 20 years, we may see the emergence of AI superintelligence—systems more intelligent than humans,” he warned. “We are building something whose nature is still unknown to us, and we haven’t yet figured out how to make these systems completely safe.”
