Saudi ship carrying U.S. weapons for Israel arrested at Italy’s Genoa Port

PoriPurno News Desk | August 13, 2025

Genoa, Italy — Port workers in Genoa have detained a Saudi Arabian cargo ship allegedly transporting U.S.-made weapons destined for Israel, marking another instance of European dockworkers refusing to facilitate arms shipments amid the ongoing war in Gaza.

The vessel, Bahri Yanbu, arrived at Genoa port on Friday, August 8, reportedly with plans to load additional weapons before continuing to Abu Dhabi. According to The Cradle, workers discovered the ship was already carrying arms and ammunition intended for Israel.

Prior to docking in Italy, the ship had stopped at Maryland, USA, where it was reportedly loaded with the weaponry. Upon learning of the cargo’s final destination, around 40 dockworkers boarded the vessel to verify the presence of the arms.

“We do not work for war,” said Jose Nivoi, a member of the Autonomous Collective of Port Workers and Union in Genoa. He described the incident as “arms smuggling” and confirmed that port authorities have pledged to create a permanent monitoring team to prevent such incidents in the future.

This is not the first time Genoa port workers have taken such a stand. In 2019, they blocked another arms shipment under similar circumstances. Since Israel’s military operations in Gaza intensified following the October 7, 2023, attacks, dockworkers in several European countries have been increasingly proactive in disrupting the supply of weapons to the Israeli military.

On June 4 this year, workers at the French port of Fos-Marseille also refused to load weapons bound for Israel, forcing the ship to depart without its intended cargo.

The latest incident in Genoa underscores growing grassroots resistance across Europe to arms transfers that could be used in the Gaza conflict, which has been widely condemned as a humanitarian catastrophe.
