Five Al Jazeera Journalists Killed in Israeli Airstrike on Gaza

PoriPurno News Desk | August 10, 2025

Gaza City — A devastating Israeli airstrike has claimed the lives of five journalists from Al Jazeera in the besieged Gaza Strip, intensifying international outrage over the ongoing conflict in the region. The attack, which took place on the evening of August 10, targeted a temporary media tent set up outside Al Shifa Hospital’s main gate in Gaza City.

Among the deceased is Anas Al Sharif, a prominent reporter known widely within the Arabic-speaking world. According to reports from Al Jazeera, the strike killed a total of seven people, including the five journalists.

The journalists confirmed dead in the attack are:

  • Anas Al Sharif (28), Reporter
  • Mohammad Kreikeh, Correspondent
  • Ibrahim Zaher, Cameraman
  • Mohammad Nawfal, Journalist
  • Momen Aliwa, Journalist

Shortly before the attack, Anas Al Sharif posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), describing a surge in Israeli aggression across Gaza City. His post included a video capturing the sounds of explosions and flashes of orange light in the sky.

The Israeli military, responding to international condemnation, claimed in a statement that Anas Al Sharif was a leader of a Hamas faction, providing ‘evidence’ to support their accusation. However, human rights monitor Muhammad Shehada of the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor refuted these claims, stating that there is no proof of the journalist’s involvement in any violent activities. Shehada noted, “From morning until evening, Anas was reporting news on camera.”

Al Jazeera strongly condemned the Israeli allegations as “incendiary propaganda,” reiterating that the accusations against Anas have been previously refuted by international journalist organizations. In July, an Israeli military spokesperson also accused Anas of being a Hamas operative — a charge denied as false by press freedom groups worldwide.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) highlighted that it had expressed concerns for Anas’s safety on multiple occasions, citing a pattern of Israeli military targeting of journalists in Gaza. Since the escalation of Israeli military operations in Gaza in October 2023, over 200 journalists and media personnel have been killed in the conflict zone, including many from Al Jazeera and their family members.

Human rights organizations accuse Israeli forces of deliberately targeting journalists and media infrastructure to suppress coverage of alleged abuses and atrocities in Gaza. The international community has repeatedly called for accountability and protection of journalists working in conflict zones.

This latest attack on Al Jazeera journalists marks a grave escalation and raises serious concerns about press freedom and the safety of media workers reporting from Gaza.
