Government Spends Tk 12 Crore Per Person for Overseas Treatment of 2024 Uprising Victims

PoriPurno News Desk | August 06, 2025

The Government of Bangladesh has reportedly spent Tk 12 crore (approximately USD 1 million) for the treatment of each injured victim sent abroad following the 2024 mass uprising. A total of 75 individuals wounded during the uprising have been flown to countries including Thailand, Singapore, Russia, and Turkey, according to Faruk E Azam, the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Liberation War Affairs.

He disclosed this information during a keynote speech at a discussion event hosted by the National Garment Workers Federation at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Wednesday (August 6).

Lifetime Benefits and Global-Standard Treatment

Faruk E Azam emphasized that the government’s initiative was not based on cost but on the quality of medical care.

“Those whose treatment was deemed insufficient within the country were sent abroad. The government spent Tk 12 crore per person, prioritizing medical standards over financial considerations,” he said.

He also noted that all wounded participants of the 2024 uprising are now receiving a monthly allowance of Tk 10,000, alongside one-time financial grants. The government has also ensured lifetime access to free medical services in all public hospitals under the Ministry of Health, with health cards issued to each injured individual.

“The Ministry of Health has taken full responsibility for their care in all specialized hospitals,” Azam said.

Comprehensive Rehabilitation Plan in Progress

The adviser announced a robust government-led rehabilitation program tailored to the personal needs and preferences of the injured. For those without adequate skills, training programs will be introduced, followed by job placements based on their new qualifications and existing demands in the labor market.

Azam, however, clarified that the government will not introduce a quota system for employment under the title of “July Warriors” (referring to the uprising participants), noting that the uprising itself was rooted in the demand to abolish quota systems in public service recruitment.

“No one will be left unemployed. Every effort is being made to help them live with dignity and independence,” he assured.

Background: The 2024 Uprising

The 2024 mass uprising, widely referred to as the “Quota Rebellion”, was a defining moment in Bangladesh’s contemporary political history. What began as a student-led protest against the existing quota system in public jobs soon escalated into a nationwide movement, met with both violent suppression and broad public sympathy.

Dozens were killed or wounded during the unrest. Since then, the government has recognized the incident as a pivotal national event and committed to long-term medical and socioeconomic support for those affected.
