Gunfire Resumes at Ghumdhum Border Area, Anxiety Among Residents

PoriPurno News Desk | August 11, 2025

Gunshots were once again heard from inside Myanmar near the Ghumdhum border area of Naikhongchhari Upazila in Bandarban district. Since 10 PM on Sunday (August 10), residents living close to the border have reported intermittent gunfire sounds. After a long period of relative calm, the renewed gunfire has caused alarm among the local population.

Residents of the Ghumdhum union area said that the sounds of gunfire began late at night and continued for a considerable time. Many remain uncertain about the exact cause of the sudden clash.

Local resident Mahamudul Hasan said, “After many days, we finally heard gunshots again. Since 10 PM, the gunfire continued for a long time. We are unsure what exactly is happening.”

Lt. Colonel S M Khairul Alam, commander of the 34th Battalion of the Bangladesh Rifles (BGB) in Cox’s Bazar, stated that the gunfire originated approximately 300 to 330 meters inside Myanmar near the 34 and 35 numbered border pillars. Preliminary assessments suggest the fighting is between the Arakan Army (AA) and another insurgent group, possibly the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) or the Arakan Salvation Organization (ASO).

He further clarified, “No bullets crossed into Bangladesh territory. This incident is strictly within Myanmar’s borders.” However, BGB forces remain on high alert and are closely monitoring the situation.

It is notable that in October 2023, the Arakan Army launched an armed resistance against Myanmar’s military junta. After prolonged conflict, in December 2024, the group claimed control over 271 kilometers of the Rakhine region along the Myanmar-Bangladesh border.
