Saudi Arabia to Fund Construction of 8 Iconic Mosques in Bangladesh with Tk 244 Crore Grant

PoriPurno News Desk | July 31, 2025
In a major step toward strengthening Islamic infrastructure and cultural ties, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has announced a financial grant of Tk 244 crore (approx. USD 20.8 million) to construct eight iconic mosques across Bangladesh. The announcement was made by Dr. Abdullah Jafar H. Bin Biya, the Saudi Ambassador to Bangladesh, during a courtesy call with Religious Affairs Advisor Dr. A F M Khalid Hossain on Sunday, July 27, at the Bangladesh Secretariat.
The grant will come directly from the Royal Saudi Fund, signifying not only infrastructural development but also a deepening of religious and diplomatic relations between the two nations.
More Than Just Mosques: A Vision for Religious and Community Hubs
According to officials, these eight mosques are not intended to serve merely as places of worship. They are envisioned as multifunctional Islamic centers, which will also house facilities for:
- Islamic education and learning
- Cultural preservation
- Community development activities
The mosques will be built in different regions of Bangladesh, and land proposals from several administrative divisions have already been submitted. Authorities are in continuous communication with the remaining divisions to finalize additional land allotments.
RFID Tagging for Hajj Pilgrims and a New Arabic Language Institute
The meeting also covered several strategic proposals aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation, particularly in the religious, cultural, and educational sectors. Key highlights include:
- Implementation of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tags for Bangladeshi Hajj pilgrims to improve luggage tracking and travel logistics.
- Establishment of an Arabic Language Institute in Dhaka, aimed at improving Arabic proficiency among Bangladeshis and fostering deeper cultural understanding.
These initiatives were welcomed by both sides as essential steps to modernize religious services and expand educational opportunities.
Acknowledgement of Hajj Management and Future Improvements
The Religious Affairs Advisor extended his gratitude to the Saudi government and the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah for the successful and well-organized 2025 Hajj season. He also proposed further improvements for the upcoming year, including:
- Increasing the number of washrooms in Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah
- Ensuring uninterrupted water and electricity supply in pilgrimage areas
- Expanding the size of sleeping arrangements in tents at Mina
The Saudi Ambassador attentively listened to the recommendations and assured that they would be forwarded to the concerned authorities in the Kingdom.
Saudi-Bangladesh Ties Continue to Strengthen
The meeting reaffirmed the long-standing friendship and growing partnership between Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh. Both countries recognized the increasing depth of bilateral relations, particularly in the areas of labor, religious cooperation, and development.
Currently, more than 3.2 million Bangladeshi expatriates are working in Saudi Arabia, significantly contributing to Bangladesh’s economy through remittances. In return, skilled Bangladeshi professionals and laborers are playing an instrumental role in Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, especially in infrastructure and service sectors.
