We often hear the term “barakah in income”, but how many of us truly understand what it means? If our income increases yet inner peace remains absent, can that truly be considered barakah? This was the profound realization shared by a young professional whose outlook on life was transformed by a few simple yet powerful words from a mentor.
Tanvir (pseudonym), a sincere and dedicated individual, gives more than 100% in his professional life. Yet recently, he began to feel a nagging dissatisfaction: “Even though my income is increasing, I don’t feel any barakah in it.” Troubled and uncertain, he turned to his trusted mentor—someone whose words always brought him clarity and calm.
The mentor welcomed him with a humble cup of tea—just a tea bag dipped in hot water, no milk or sugar. Then, looking intently into Tanvir’s eyes, he asked, “What’s been weighing on your mind?”
Tanvir replied, “I feel like there’s no barakah in my earnings. Income is rising, but so are the expenses—especially the children’s education, helping out some relatives, and so on.”
Through a series of gentle, thought-provoking questions, the mentor helped Tanvir realize:
- His children attend one of the country’s best schools,
- They are well-mannered, intelligent, and respectful,
- No one in the family is seriously ill,
- His wife is kind, caring, and devoted to the family,
- His father is still alive and living with him,
- There is peace at home—all of which are priceless blessings.
The mentor explained:
“Barakah in life isn’t just about money or wealth.
If you’re healthy, if you have a loving and caring family,
if you’re able to look after them and they look after you—that is barakah.
Seeing your father’s face every day—that too is barakah.”
As Tanvir left that day, his mentor embraced him warmly and placed a hand over his head with affection. Something shifted in Tanvir’s heart. Sitting in his car, he opened the panoramic sunroof and looked up at the moonlit sky. Bathed in silver light, he lifted his hands and whispered with deep gratitude,
“It feels like all the blessings of the world are already around me.”
Conclusion:
Barakah isn’t always measured in currency. Every breath we take, every loving relationship we nurture, every safe and peaceful day, and every healthy morning—we often overlook these, yet they are each signs of divine barakah. Today’s story reminds us that true barakah must be recognized not with the eyes, but with the heart.
