Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah, the former Vice-Chancellor of Begum Rokeya University, has been arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police in connection with an ongoing corruption investigation.
The arrest was made on Thursday, August 7, from his residence in Mohammadpur, Dhaka. According to officials, the move came in response to a requisition by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) regarding a case currently under investigation.
DB Confirms the Arrest
Confirming the arrest, Mohammad Nasirul Islam, Joint Commissioner of DB (South), told the media:
“There was a requisition from the Anti-Corruption Commission concerning a case under investigation related to corruption charges. Based on that, a DB team conducted an operation and arrested Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah from his Mohammadpur residence.”
He added that the process of handing him over to the ACC is currently underway.
Background of Allegations
While the specific details of the allegations have not been publicly disclosed, Kalimullah has been under the ACC’s radar for alleged irregularities and financial mismanagement during his tenure as the Vice-Chancellor of Begum Rokeya University.
Sources within the ACC indicated that preliminary findings raised serious concerns over misuse of university funds, unlawful recruitment practices, and unapproved expenditures.

Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah is a well-known academic and political analyst in Bangladesh. He served as the Vice-Chancellor of Begum Rokeya University and is also known for his appearances in political talk shows.

Legal Proceedings Ahead
As of Thursday evening, Kalimullah remains in police custody. ACC officials are expected to formally take charge of him for further interrogation and investigation under the relevant legal provisions.
It is not yet clear when he will be produced in court.
