Since taking office, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yunus has achieved a monumental feat by preventing nearly BDT 46,308 crore (approximately USD 5.4 billion) in corruption within Bangladesh’s development projects — a remarkable achievement largely unnoticed by mainstream media.
Immediately after the interim government assumed power, it commissioned expert teams to conduct a comprehensive review of all ongoing and planned development projects. This exhaustive audit analyzed budget allocations, spending patterns, and evidence of graft or inflated estimates. The findings revealed widespread inflated costs—often one-and-a-half to two times the reasonable estimates—primarily to facilitate embezzlement.
Under Dr. Yunus’s leadership, the government took decisive corrective measures that successfully curtailed massive financial leakages across key sectors:
- Road Transport and Highways Division: Reduced expenditure by BDT 10,854.32 crore
- Bridge Division: Cut costs by BDT 7,537 crore
- Railway Ministry: Saved BDT 8,036.90 crore
- Power Division: Economized nearly BDT 7,454.31 crore
- Energy and Mineral Resources Division: Slashed expenses by BDT 12,425.51 crore
In total, the government has prevented misappropriation amounting to approximately BDT 46,308.04 crore, funds that otherwise would have been siphoned off or sent abroad illicitly.
This recovered money has been strategically used to clear all outstanding dues in Bangladesh’s energy sector, ensuring that currently, the country owes no arrears to any foreign entities for energy imports — a historic milestone. Remarkably, Dr. Yunus achieved this without dipping into Bangladesh’s foreign reserves, instead paying off USD 242 million of foreign loans within seven months by optimizing sectoral expenditures.
When Dr. Yunus assumed charge, the nation’s banking sector was on the brink of collapse, with liquidity crises threatening to shutter multiple banks except Islamic banks. Thanks to swift cabinet interventions and sound economic management, no bank closures have occurred since.
Even the Islamic banks, which had been targeted by corrupt syndicates responsible for embezzling nearly BDT 1,113.93 crore, have managed to maintain relative operational stability compared to others.
The government’s strategic decisions to rebuild the shattered economic engine are proving sustainable and are poised to benefit the next elected government profoundly.
An innovative anti-corruption measure introduced last October mandates that all future development projects must publicly disclose comprehensive project details on respective ministry websites before approval. Citizens will have a minimum two-week online window to submit feedback, ensuring transparency and public participation before projects reach the Planning Commission.

Reflecting on the precarious state of the country’s economy after the departure of the previous regime, it is evident that no leader other than Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yunus could have taken on the responsibility of governance and achieved such rapid stabilization and reform.
For this reason, the nation owes him enduring gratitude for steering Bangladesh out of an economic abyss.
