Awami League Banned: Rise of Fascism in Shahbagh Ends Where It Began

Dhaka – In a dramatic political development, the interim government of Bangladesh has officially announced the banning of the Bangladesh Awami League under the country’s Anti-Terrorism Act. The decision was reached during an emergency meeting of the Advisory Council held Saturday night at the official residence “Jamuna” of Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.
According to the government, this decision has been taken to safeguard national security and sovereignty, as well as to ensure the protection of witnesses and activists involved in the ongoing International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) process. A formal gazette notification is scheduled to be issued on the next working day.
Advisory Council Decision & Legal Amendments
The emergency session of the Advisory Council, chaired by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, approved a significant amendment to the International Crimes (Tribunal) Act, empowering the ICT to prosecute not only individuals but also political parties, affiliated organizations, and supporter groups.
At a post-meeting press briefing, Law Adviser Asif Nazrul read out the official “Statement of the Advisory Council.” It was confirmed that the Awami League’s activities—including its cyber presence—are banned until the trial of the party and its leaders at the ICT is complete.
This decision also emphasizes the safety of members of the July Movement, a rising civil society platform, as well as those bringing forth evidence and testifying in the tribunal.
Additionally, the Council resolved to finalize and publish the “July Declaration” within the next 30 working days, outlining the transitional roadmap for governance and justice.
Shahbagh Movement: From Symbol of Protest to Alleged Fascism
This sweeping action echoes back to 2013, when the Shahbagh Movement—sparked by public demand for capital punishment of war criminals—emerged as a landmark civil protest. Then supported by the Awami League government, the movement was hailed as a citizens’ uprising but drew criticism from various quarters for allegedly suppressing dissent and consolidating authoritarian control.
At that time, the Daily Amar Desh was one of the few publications that openly criticized the movement, publishing the now-famous headline: “Footsteps of Fascism at Shahbagh” on February 9, 2013. The newspaper’s editorial stance led to the government shutting it down and arresting its acting editor, Mahmudur Rahman, in a widely condemned move.
Following the Shahbagh protests, the ICT Act was amended by the then-Awami League government to allow prosecution appeals, which critics say gave the state unprecedented leverage in judicial processes.
A Turning Point in Bangladesh Politics
This ban on the Awami League marks a historic and controversial moment. Once the party that led Bangladesh to independence in 1971, it is now facing a ban under terrorism laws amid pending war crimes investigations. Legal experts, international observers, and rights organizations are expected to respond in the coming days.
The coming weeks are likely to define the future of Bangladesh’s political trajectory, judicial independence, and the legitimacy of transitional justice under the interim administration.
