From Silicon Valley to Bangladesh: Engineer Mohammad Enayetur Rahman Emerges as a Pioneer of the Semiconductor Industry
Dhaka, Bangladesh: Engineer Mohammad Enayetur Rahman has emerged as one of the key figures in Bangladesh’s growing semiconductor industry after leaving a secure career in Silicon Valley to build a globally competitive chip-design ecosystem in his home country.
A graduate of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Rahman began his professional career in the United States, working as a chip designer at Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), one of the world’s leading semiconductor companies.
However, driven by a vision to connect talented Bangladeshi engineers with the global semiconductor ecosystem, Rahman returned to Bangladesh and founded Ulkasemi in Dhaka in 2007 with a team of just four engineers.
Nearly two decades later, the company has grown into a major semiconductor design organization, employing more than 600 design engineers and operating design centers across four countries.
Ulkasemi has established expertise in highly specialized semiconductor technologies, including analog circuit design, custom IC layout, and other complex integrated circuit design services. Its growth has positioned the company as an important contributor to Bangladesh’s emerging semiconductor and chip-design sector.
A major milestone in the company’s international journey came in 2021, when Ulkasemi became a partner in TSMC’s Design Center Alliance (DCA). The partnership with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), widely regarded as the world’s leading semiconductor foundry, marked a significant international recognition of the capabilities of Bangladeshi semiconductor engineers.
Rahman’s journey from a chip designer in Silicon Valley to an entrepreneur building a large-scale semiconductor engineering workforce in Bangladesh reflects the potential of the country’s highly skilled technology professionals.
His decision to return home and invest in local engineering talent has also demonstrated how Bangladeshi professionals with international experience can contribute to developing high-value technology industries within the country.
With the global semiconductor industry becoming increasingly important to the digital economy, Bangladesh is seeking to expand its presence beyond traditional technology outsourcing and into advanced areas such as integrated circuit design, chip development, and semiconductor engineering.
Rahman’s work through Ulkasemi represents one of the notable examples of this transition, particularly in developing a skilled workforce capable of participating in the global semiconductor value chain.
