Owaisi Slams Centre Over Branding Bengali-Speaking Muslims as ‘Bangladeshis’

Hyderabad MP and president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), Asaduddin Owaisi, has sharply criticized the Indian central government over the alleged illegal detention and forced pushback of Bengali-speaking Muslims across various states in India. Labeling them as “Bangladeshis” without proper verification, he argues, is a gross violation of both human rights and constitutional values.
Social Media Outcry Over Discriminatory Practices
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Owaisi expressed his anger:
“Bengali-speaking Muslims are being illegally detained and branded as ‘Bangladeshis’. The fact is, most of them are Indian citizens.”
He added that these individuals are often the most vulnerable segments of Indian society—construction workers, sanitation laborers, or waste collectors—who have neither the financial means nor legal awareness to challenge police excesses.
“This government is weak before the powerful and powerful before the weak,” Owaisi wrote, accusing the administration of selectively targeting the poor and minorities.
A Strategy of Systemic Oppression?
Owaisi described the government’s actions as a calculated form of state repression, aimed at marginalizing and disenfranchising poor Muslims. He noted that many victims are declared illegal immigrants and pushed across the border into Bangladesh without a proper legal process or citizenship verification—a move he called a direct breach of human rights.
“This is not law enforcement—it’s a targeted campaign against the poor and minorities,” says AIMIM chief.
