Dhaka, June 22 — Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has vehemently denied accusations of compromising Bangladesh’s sovereignty, asserting that the nation will never be sold. Her remarks came during a press conference at Gono Bhaban, following her recent diplomatic visit to India.
Addressing concerns over permitting Indian trains to transit through Bangladesh, Hasina dismissed the notion that such agreements undermine national independence. She highlighted the historical context of Bangladesh’s liberation, emphasizing that the country fought for and achieved its freedom through a hard-won war.
“Bangladesh is a sovereign nation, and our independence is not for sale,” the Prime Minister declared. She criticized those accusing her of selling the country, questioning their logic and motives. “How can a country be sold? Is there a scale to measure it?” she asked rhetorically, underscoring the absurdity of such claims.
Sheikh Hasina also reminded the public of the significant role India played during the Liberation War, noting that Indian forces withdrew from Bangladesh at the request of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. She contrasted this with other instances where foreign troops remain stationed in countries they assist, such as American forces in Japan and Russian forces in Germany.
Reiterating the economic benefits of restored rail links with India, Hasina stated, “Transit through our country does not harm us; it boosts our economy.” She dismissed isolationist policies, pointing out that many European countries operate without borders, enhancing trade and cooperation without sacrificing sovereignty.
The Prime Minister also took the opportunity to criticize past military regimes for their secret dealings with India despite public anti-India rhetoric. She urged critics to consider the positive impact of improved connectivity on ordinary people’s lives and national commerce.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to New Delhi, at the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, focused on strengthening bilateral ties and exploring further avenues for cooperation. The two-day visit, which began on June 21, included discussions on various strategic and economic issues, reflecting the deep and historic ties between the two neighboring countries.
