History is replete with remarkable events that exemplify the profound values of Islam. One such inspiring incident is from the life of Hazrat Umar Ibn Al-Khattab (RA), a paragon of justice and integrity. This story not only reflects unwavering justice but also upholds a timeless Islamic principle: the fulfillment of promises.

⚔️ The Captured Enemy Prince

One day in Madinah, a Persian prince—known for conspiring against Islam and actively fighting in battles against Muslims—was captured and brought before Hazrat Umar (RA). The caliph, before issuing a final verdict, summoned the executioner and asked the prisoner:

“Do you have any final wishes?”

The prince replied,
“Yes, I am thirsty. I would like a drink of water.”

🧊 Final Wish: A Cup of Water

Hazrat Umar (RA) immediately ordered water to be brought. As the prince was handed the cup, he began trembling in fear and could not bring himself to drink. Umar (RA) asked:

“Why are you not drinking?”

The prince responded,
“O Commander of the Faithful! I fear that the moment I lift the cup, your executioner may strike me down.”

To reassure him, Hazrat Umar (RA) said:
“Rest assured. You will not be harmed until you have finished drinking.”

🤔 A Clever Trap Meets Unwavering Justice

What happened next left everyone stunned. The prince deliberately dropped the cup, spilling the water on the ground. He then said:

“I have not drunk the water. And you gave your word that I wouldn’t be punished until I did.”

The Muslim soldiers stood shocked. Could a man, responsible for the deaths of many Muslims, now escape punishment through a trick?

Yet Hazrat Umar (RA), of whom the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“The most steadfast in upholding Allah’s commands is Umar.”
(Sahih Muslim: 2398)

—calmly declared:

“You have spoken the truth. I shall not break my promise. Since you did not drink the water, I will not punish you. You are free.”

🤲 A Test, Not a Trick

To everyone’s astonishment, the prince said:

“I devised this plan not to escape death, but to ensure that no one assumes I accepted Islam out of fear. I now wish to embrace Islam with dignity.”

He then proclaimed the Shahada:

“Ashhadu alla ilaha illallahu wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah.”

His sincere conversion to Islam shocked the entire Muslim community. From being a sworn enemy, he went on to become a commander in the Muslim army and a trusted advisor to Hazrat Umar (RA).

📖 The Qur’an and Hadith on Fulfilling Promises

🔹 The Holy Qur’an states:

“And fulfill [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned.”
(Surah Al-Isra: 34)

“O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts.”
(Surah Al-Ma’idah: 1)

🔹 The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when entrusted, he betrays.”
(Sahih Bukhari & Muslim)

“Truth leads to salvation, while falsehood leads to destruction.”
(Musnad Ahmad: 8728)

🧭 What Can We Learn?

In today’s world, we often break promises for trivial gains. But the lives of the Sahabah (companions of the Prophet) teach us that promise-keeping is not just a virtue—it is a sacred duty in Islam.

🔸 If we adopt truthfulness and integrity, peace will return to our societies.
🔸 By living out these values, we can once again inspire others toward the beauty of Islam.

📌 Final Thoughts

Islam is not limited to prayer, fasting, or pilgrimage—it is a complete way of life that builds character and cultivates justice. The story of Hazrat Umar (RA) teaches us how to uphold Islamic values, justice, and promises even in the face of adversity.

May Allah make us among those who are truthful, trustworthy, and loyal to our promises. Ameen.
