16 Phrases That Can Destroy Your Iman – A Quran & Hadith Warning

PoriPurno News Desk | August 07, 2025
In our daily conversations, it is common to use phrases and expressions without fully realizing their religious implications. Unfortunately, some commonly used sentences, though culturally widespread, contain elements of kufr (disbelief) or shirk (associating partners with Allah), which are grave sins in Islam. Repeated use of such expressions can seriously damage a Muslim’s iman (faith).
This article presents 16 regularly used phrases that Muslims must avoid to protect their faith, supported by Quranic verses and authentic Hadiths.
The Danger of Words in Islam
Allah warns in the Quran:
وَقُلْ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَغْضُضُوا مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِمْ وَيَحْفَظُوا فُرُوجَهُمْ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ أَزْكَىٰ لَهُمْ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ خَبِيرٌ بِمَا يَصْنَعُونَ
“And tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do.”
— (Surah An-Nur 24:30)
And the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:
“إِنَّ العَبْدَ لَيَتَكَلَّمُ بِالكَلِمَةِ مَا يَتَحَسَّبُ بِهَا فَيَهْوِي بِهَا إِلَى النَّارِ أَبْعَدَ مَا بَيْنَ المَشْرِقِ وَالمَغْرِبِ”
“Indeed, a servant may say a word without considering it, which causes him to fall into the Hellfire farther than the distance between the East and West.”
— (Sahih al-Bukhari 6474, Sahih Muslim 2989)
Thus, the words we speak have tremendous consequences, and carelessness may lead to spiritual ruin.
