Having visited Tangua Haor recently for a river float, I faced considerable difficulties due to unreliable booking agents and changing environmental conditions. These challenges provided valuable lessons which I now share to help fellow travelers enjoy a smoother experience.
Key Travel Tips for Tangua Haor Visitors
- Avoid Booking Through Middlemen or Facebook Agents
Many travelers book boat trips through Facebook or local travel agents without verifying their authenticity. I recommend booking directly with the boat operators to avoid deception, inflated prices, or last-minute cancellations. - Water Levels Are Lower This Season
Unlike previous years, water levels in Tangua Haor are currently lower, which diminishes some of the wetland’s natural charm. Travelers should temper expectations accordingly. - Optimal Travel Route to Haor
- From Dhaka, the preferred route is to travel by train to Sylhet and then proceed to Sunamganj.
- Avoid road travel via Ashuganj in Brahmanbaria due to severe traffic congestion that can disrupt travel plans.
- Be Wary of False Pickup Claims
Some boat operators may claim to pick travelers up from Shaheb Bari Ghat in Sunamganj, but due to bridge restrictions, large boats cannot navigate from this point. Most boats now depart from Anwarpur or Tahirpur, approximately 27 kilometers from Sunamganj. Confirm pickup points multiple times before your trip.

If traveling with women and children, opt for AC rooms on the boat if available. The wetland area experiences intense sunlight, and non-AC spaces can become unbearably hot, even with fans. For single travelers or bachelors, non-AC or rooftop options may be acceptable. - Water Temperature and Bathing Tips
Due to heavy sunlight and shallow waters, most of the Haor’s water is warm. However, the water in the nearby Jadukata River remains cool and refreshing, making it a preferable spot for bathing.
