From Social Media Stardom to Tragedy: The Harsh Reality Behind the Rise and Fall of Content Creators

The tragic news of Indian content creator Misha Agarwal’s suicide has sent shockwaves across the internet. Once a digital icon with millions of followers, Misha reportedly fell into deep depression after a sudden drop in her follower count. Gripped by the fear that her career was crumbling, she ultimately chose to end her life.

This incident is not just an isolated tragedy—it’s a stark warning. In the world of social media, one can rise to stardom overnight, and just as quickly, fame can vanish. Bangladesh is no exception to this volatile cycle.

Currently, top-tier content creators in the country are earning as much as BDT 10 million (1 crore) per month. Mid-level creators earn between BDT 2-3 million, while even newer or smaller creators can make around BDT 200,000–300,000 monthly. However, this success is limited to less than 1% of all creators. The remaining 99% continue to chase a dream, hoping to one day become internet millionaires.

The “Shelf Life” of a Content Creator is Barely 5 Years

Sustainability is a major concern in this profession. On average, the career span of a content creator is just 4 to 5 years. As new faces emerge, audience interest shifts, leaving once-famous creators behind.

Several once-popular Bangladeshi creators are now out of the limelight. Take R.S. Fahim, for instance, who was once a youth icon—he is now reportedly settling in Malaysia. Others like Tawhid Afridi, Rafsan the Chilli Cook, and Tahsee Nation have seen a noticeable decline in their popularity. While a few older creators have managed to survive, newer faces continue to dominate the scene.

There are exceptions, however. Take Tushar, a creator known for his consistent and quality content rather than viral hits. He commented, “A content creator’s shelf life is hardly five years—after that, you expire.”

Lifestyle vs. Reality

After achieving fame, many content creators become accustomed to an extravagant lifestyle. Monthly earnings of BDT 500,000–2,000,000 are often spent on luxury fashion, foreign travel, expensive cars, and fine dining. But when the work dries up, sustaining that lifestyle becomes nearly impossible.

This disconnect often leads to mental health struggles. Many creators crumble under financial pressure. Similar patterns are observed among singers and actors who, later in life, struggle to afford even basic medical care. Their stories often end in poverty and neglect.

What Can Be Done?

Content creation is undoubtedly a promising profession—but entering this field requires a calculated approach:

  • Avoid excessive greed; instead, focus on patience and consistency.
  • Invest wisely for the future when income is high.
  • Gradually diversify into other professions or businesses to ensure life doesn’t come to a halt when the creative career ends.
  • Be mindful of mental health and seek professional counseling if needed.

The glamorous lives of social media stars may dazzle on the surface, but behind the screen lies a complex and challenging reality. Just as creators prepare for the peak of their careers, they must also be mentally prepared for the possibility of decline.
