Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, has accused the Awami League of dismantling the foundations of democracy by depriving citizens of their fundamental and voting rights. He further alleged that every top leader of the Awami League was involved in large-scale corruption. âIt was the Awami League that initiated the culture of enforced disappearances in Bangladesh,â he added.
He made these remarks while addressing journalists at the âMeet the Reportersâ event organized by the Dhaka Reportersâ Unity on Monday (May 12).
Human Rights Violations Behind Party Ban
Blaming the partyâs prohibition on its record of rights violations, Shafiqul Alam said, âThe Awami League was banned due to its blatant human rights abuses and suppression of voting rights. People canât even remember the last time they voted. During their regime, all civil liberties were curtailed. The decision to ban the party was taken in consultation with all stakeholders supporting the transitional movement.â

Reforms Ordered to Prevent Market Looting
Commenting on the state of the countryâs stock market, Alam stated, âReforms have been instructed by Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus to ensure that removing one looter doesnât pave the way for another. If implemented properly, these reforms will accelerate the growth of the stock market at double the current pace.â
Call for Journalists to Advocate for Their Rights
Expressing disappointment with journalistsâ unions, Alam remarked, âFor the past 15 years, theyâve been preoccupied with land plots in Purbachal. Now is the time to raise voices for real journalistsâ rights. No journalist should earn less than BDT 30,000 a month. Any media house unable to meet this minimum salary standard should be shut down.â
Government Committed to Freedom of Speech
Addressing concerns over free speech, he said, âAlthough freedom of speech is enshrined in the constitution, it has often been violated. The current government is committed to institutionalizing freedom of speech in the country.â
