Dhaka, May 4 — On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has issued a strong statement reaffirming its commitment to a free and independent media landscape in Bangladesh. The party emphasized the essential role of journalism in upholding democracy and called for unity in defending journalistic freedom and integrity.
In a message issued by BNP leader Tarique Rahman and the News Team of PoriPurno.com, the party highlighted the crucial contributions of Bangladeshi journalists who, despite years of repression, continued to expose truth and injustice with unwavering resolve.
“Journalists serve as a vital pillar of democracy; their work must be protected and embraced, not attacked or censored,” the statement read. It strongly criticized the previous authoritarian regime for what it described as “state-sponsored repression” and a “systematic erosion of press freedom.”
During those challenging years, many courageous journalists reported on corruption, human rights violations, and governance failures, often at great personal risk. According to BNP, these voices — whether in mainstream outlets or on social media, within the country or abroad — played a crucial role in safeguarding democratic ideals.
BNP expressed its support for a “new brand of journalism” rooted in ethical standards, objectivity, and public service. “We respect fearless and objective reporting, even when it may not align with our agenda,” said the party, reaffirming its stance that journalism must serve the people above politics.
The statement concluded with a call for national unity to protect freedom of expression, press independence, and human rights: “If we are to have a strong and sustainable democracy, journalistic integrity and freedom must be maintained. Let us set aside all differences to build a Bangladesh where elected, accountable governments ensure liberty, justice, and the rule of law for all — including members of the press.”
