Death of Imam Rais Uddin in Gazipur: Sunni Scholars Allege Planned Murder, Demand Justice

Tensions are running high in the Gacha Police Station area of Gazipur City Corporation following the death of Maulana Rais Uddin, the Imam and Khatib of a local mosque. According to reports, a longstanding dispute existed between two local groups over the mosque committee. On the evening of the incident, one faction allegedly incited local residents by bringing forth an accusation of sexual assault against Imam Rais Uddin.

In a tragic turn of events, an enraged mob tied him to a tree and brutally beat him before handing him over to the police. He was later sent to the district jail that night, where he reportedly died in custody.

Family members and close associates strongly refute the allegations brought against him, calling them entirely fabricated. They claim the incident was a premeditated act of murder and that he was denied proper medical treatment, which they believe hastened his death.

Maulana Rais Uddin hailed from the Matlab area in Cumilla and had been living in Gazipur for many years. He served as the Imam and Khatib of a local mosque and was an active member of Bangladesh Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat. He also formerly held a leadership position in Islami Chhatra Sena, Dhaka Metropolitan Unit.

The incident has sparked a nationwide outcry. Sunni scholars have categorically labeled the event as a “planned murder” and are demanding an immediate and impartial investigation, as well as exemplary punishment for those responsible. Protest marches were held in the capital, Dhaka, today, with religious leaders and followers calling on the government to uncover the truth and ensure justice.
