He Came Home for Them, But Laid Them to Rest: A Tragedy in Lakshmipur

PoriPurno News Desk | August 07, 2025
What was meant to be a joyful reunion turned into an unimaginable tragedy for expatriate Abdul Bahar, who had just returned from Oman. Instead of embracing his family, Bahar ended up burying them—his wife, daughter, mother, grandmother, sister-in-law, niece, and aunt—after a horrific road accident claimed their lives mere kilometers from home.
On Wednesday morning, seven bodies arrived at the small village of Choupolli in North Joypur Union of Lakshmipur Sadar Upazila. They were the remains of Bahar’s grandmother Fayzun Nesa (80), mother Khursheda Begum (55), wife Kobita Begum (30), daughter Meem Akter (2), niece Reshmi Akter (10), sister-in-law Laboni Begum (30), and Laboni’s daughter Lamia Akter (9). The air was filled with grief as neighbors and relatives gathered in silence around the rows of coffins laid in the courtyard.
The family had traveled to Dhaka to receive Bahar, who was returning home after working in Oman. As they journeyed back together, their car was filled with laughter, joy, and anticipation. No one could have predicted that in just a few moments, all of it would be lost forever.
The Accident That Changed Everything
Around 5:00 AM Wednesday, in the Alaiyapur area of Begumganj, Noakhali, only 10 kilometers from their home, the microbus carrying the family veered off the road and plunged into a roadside canal. Bahar was the sole survivor. Everyone else died on impact or shortly after.
Bahar recounted the nightmare through tears:
“We were all laughing and talking. My mother told me how much she had waited for me. Then, suddenly, there was a loud crash—and everything went black. The next thing I remember, the car was floating in the water.”
He believes the accident was caused by the driver falling asleep at the wheel.
“In Comilla, the car nearly crashed once before. I told the driver to rest if needed. But he kept driving. When the car fell into the canal, we told him to open the doors. Instead, he escaped through a window, leaving us trapped inside,” Bahar said bitterly.

The Funeral of Seven
By noon on Wednesday, funeral preparations were underway. A canopy was set up in the courtyard for ritual washing. Chairs were arranged, not for celebration but for mourning. That afternoon, a joint prayer (janazah) was held for six of the deceased. The body of Bahar’s grandmother, Fayzun Nesa, was taken to her native village in Hajir Para Union for burial. The rest were laid to rest in the family graveyard at Choupolli.
Two graves were dug side by side, with four more nearby—a chilling row marking the loss of nearly an entire generation in a single day. As evening fell, Bahar—once full of hope and excitement to reunite with his loved ones—personally placed them in their final resting places.
Grief Engulfs the Village
The entire Choupolli village is in shock. Never before had they witnessed such a catastrophic loss within one family. Hundreds gathered to mourn in stunned silence. Elderly villagers wiped tears while children clung to their mothers in fear.
Inside one of seven adjacent homes in the village, Abdur Rahim, Bahar’s father, lay silently in bed. Too heartbroken to speak, too weak to stand. He had prepared for days to welcome his returning son. Instead, he lost his wife, mother-in-law, two daughters-in-law, and three granddaughters. His world has collapsed around him.
Bahar, overwhelmed and broken, stood in the courtyard and asked a relative:
“I came back to embrace them all. Now I only have seven coffins. Who am I supposed to live for now?”
A Loss Too Deep to Bear
Local Union Parishad Chairman Mizanur Rahman described the tragedy as an irreparable loss:
“An entire family is gone. It’s a wound that time cannot heal. I’ve never seen such grief before in my life. The entire village is devastated.”
As the sun set over Choupolli, the village remained blanketed in mourning. The laughter and joy of reunion were replaced by wails of sorrow and the stillness of death. What was to be a beginning became a heartbreaking end.
