Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus has taken a groundbreaking stance, successfully pulling Bangladesh out of ten strategic projects that were unilaterally imposed by India. Experts describe this as one of the strongest diplomatic assertions since Bangladesh’s independence and a courageous move to safeguard national interests.

Concerns had long been brewing over certain Indo-Bangla initiatives that, while beneficial to India’s strategic, economic, and military objectives, posed significant threats to Bangladesh’s sovereignty. Dr. Yunus reviewed these projects and took a firm position—declaring that Bangladesh’s sovereignty and future security cannot be compromised.

The 10 Controversial Projects That Have Been Halted:

1. Tripura–Chattogram Railway Link
India was gaining access to Chattogram Port without paying any transit fees, placing Bangladesh under strategic pressure.

2. Agreement on the Use of Chattogram and Mongla Ports
India’s potential expansion into the Bay of Bengal would have posed a security risk for Bangladesh.

3. Sylhet–Shibchar Highway Connection
This would have eased access to India’s northeastern states, without yielding any strategic benefit to Bangladesh.

4. Petroleum Pipeline Expansion
India aimed to penetrate the Bangladeshi energy market from Tripura, seeking monopolistic control.

5. Akhaura–Abhaynagar Railway Route
The route was intended to facilitate India’s commercial and military logistics, increasing risks for Bangladesh.

6. Ashuganj–Agartala Corridor
Seen as a strategic trap, this would have granted India faster and cheaper access to its Seven Sister states.

7. Feni River Water Management
India enjoyed unilateral access to water, while Bangladesh suffered from shortages.

8. Farakka Barrage and Other Water Projects
India’s irregular water management has long contributed to droughts and floods in Northern Bangladesh.

9. Exclusion of China and Overreliance on India
China’s interest in participating in international projects was repeatedly blocked due to India’s influence.

10. Internal Security Threats
Activities by India’s RAW agents, drug trafficking, and cross-border criminal movements would have intensified.

A Strong National Stand

Had these projects been implemented, Bangladesh’s defense forces would have been forced to continuously monitor Indian activities. Additionally, the country could have faced a surge in smuggling, espionage, and broader security threats.

Thanks to Dr. Yunus’s decisive intervention, Bangladesh now has the opportunity to reaffirm its strategic independence and secure its national integrity.

Political Maneuvering and BNP’s Involvement

Analysts believe that some quarters are displeased with Dr. Yunus’s pro-Bangladesh stance. These groups are allegedly leveraging the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to politically undermine him—a classic case of using a political party to serve hidden agendas.

This raises an important question among the public: Who benefits from silencing a voice that dares to speak for the country?

Prime Minister’s Past Remark Reignites Debate

A past statement by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina—“India will remember forever what we have given them”—has resurfaced amid this controversy. Citizens are questioning whether the country’s sovereignty is being traded away at the cost of future generations.

A Nation Awakens: Bangladesh Is Our Pride

The people of Bangladesh are now standing tall, unified by a renewed spirit of patriotism. Their message is clear:
“We love our country more than life. Bangladesh is only our land.”

With hopes of building a strong, independent, and dignified nation, the public is rallying behind Dr. Yunus and his bold vision for the future.
